Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
1/2 cup sugar
1 2/3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons cardamom , ground
1/2 cup almonds , toasted and chopped
1 lightly beaten egg yolk
1 tablespoon water

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F
2.In a bowl, cream shortening, butter and sugar until fluffy.
3.Beat in the egg.
4.Sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and cardamom together.
5.Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture.
6.Fold in almonds.
7.Mix egg yolk and water.
8.Shape dough into 1 inch balls.
9.Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
10.Brush with egg yolk mixture.
11.Bake for 15 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
12.Remove to wire racks to cool.
