1 cup vegetable shortening ( i sub butter )
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate , melted

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2.In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar until smooth.
3.Beat in egg and vanilla.
4.Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
5.Stir flour mixture into the sugar mixture until just blended.
6.Divide dough in half.
7.Stir melted chocolate into one half of the dough until well combined.
8.Roll a tablespoonful of vanilla dough and a tablespoonful of chocolate dough separately into long strips about ½ inch in diameter.
9.Twist the strips together and form into a figure 8 shape.
10.Place the cookies 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until edges are golden.
11.Cool cookies on wire racks.
