Ingredients

2 cups milk
1 cup butter ( at room temperature )
2 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
6 cups flour
Originating from Germany, Zwieback is a type of bread that has been double-baked into a crunchy and dry slice. The word “Zwieback” is German and means twice baked. Zwieback is a popular food for babies because of its texture that dissolves easily in the mouth. It is also a great accompaniment to tea or coffee.

Instructions

1.Warm the milk to lukewarm
2.Mix butter and sugar until smooth
3.Add yeast to lukewarm water, stir and let rest for a couple of minutes
4.Add yeast mix, salt, and flour alternately to the milk mixture, stir until it forms a dough
5.Knead for a few minutes then transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise for an hour or until doubled in size.
6.Preheat oven to 375°F and grease two loaf pans
7.Punch down dough and let it rest for a few minutes
8.Divide the dough into two halves, form into loaves and put them into the pans. Let rest for another 20 minutes
9.Bake for 30 minutes and cool on racks before slicing and toasting.

Zwieback is crunchy and easy to make.
