Zalabiya is a traditional Yemenite doughnut dish that is popular in the Middle East, especially during Chanuka, the Festival of Lights. It is an easy and fun way to celebrate the holiday season with family and friends. The doughnuts are typically served hot and fresh, dusted with powdered sugar and enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea. They can also be filled with chocolate, jam, or custard to add extra flavor.

Instructions

1.Combine flour and sugar in a mixing bowl and set aside.
2.Beat the egg and mix it into the dry ingredients.
3.In a separate bowl, dissolve yeast in water or soy milk.
4.Gradually mix the liquid into the dry ingredients, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
5.Cover the mixing bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
6.Heat oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot. Form small balls from the risen dough and drop them into the hot oil.
7.Fry until golden brown on both sides, flipping as needed. Drain on a paper towel.
8.Roll in powdered sugar while still warm.

PROS

Zalabiya is a great treat for Chanuka or any special occasion.
The doughnuts are crispy on the outside and have a soft, fluffy texture inside.
They are easy and quick to make, plus they are versatile and can be served as-is or filled with a variety of fillings.
They can be made in advance and kept in an airtight container for up to three days.

CONS

Zalabiya is deep-fried, making it high in calories and fat.
They should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While Zalabiya may not be the healthiest dessert option, it contains a good source of dietary fiber and protein. The doughnuts are known to provide a quick energy boost during a busy day. Since they are made from scratch, it is easy to control the ingredients and filling. Customizing the recipe with healthier options such as using whole wheat flour or baking the doughnuts instead of frying makes them a bit healthier. However, for festive occasions like Chanuka, it is okay to indulge a bit.
