Ingredients

Dal :
1/2 cup yellow dried split peas ( chana dal )
1 cup red lentils ( masoor dal )
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 pinch sea salt
1 pinch asafoetida powder ( hing )
water to cover
Tarka :
2 tablespoons ghee ( clarified butter )
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon brown mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 onion , finely chopped
2 cloves garlic , minced

Instructions

1.Rinse lentils and split peas under cold water and drain.
2.Add drained lentils and split peas to a pot with turmeric, salt, asafoetida and enough water to cover the lentils and peas. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce heat to medium, and simmer until lentils and peas are soft, about 30 minutes.
3.In a separate frying pan or saucepan, heat the oil and ghee over high heat.
4.Add mustard seeds, cumin, and onion and cook, stirring occasionally until onion has caramelized, about 10 minutes.
5.Reduce heat to medium-low, stir in garlic, and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
6.Stir in lentil mixture and continue to cook until flavors have melded, 5 to 10 minutes more.
