Upma Kozhakattai is a traditional South Indian dish that is typically served for breakfast by the Tamil Brahmins. It is made with idli rava, a type of rice flour that is different from the regular rice flour. The dish has a unique texture and a savory taste that is perfect for breakfast. The thuvaiyal that is served with the dish is made from roasted chana dal, coconut, dried red chilies, and tamarind paste. It adds a spicy and tangy flavor to the dish which complements the mild taste of the Upma Kozhakattai.

Instructions

1.In a pan, roast the idli rava on low flame until it turns light brown. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
2.In the same pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, udad dal, asafoetida powder and red chilies. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add water, salt, jaggery and frozen coconut, and bring it to boil.
3.Slowly pour the roasted idli rava into the pan, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
4.Cover the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5.Once the water has been absorbed and the mixture becomes thick, remove from heat and let it cool down for 5 minutes.
6.Roll the mixture into small balls, and steam them in an idli maker for 10 minutes.
7.Serve hot with thuvaiyal.
