Ingredients

1 lb ground turkey or 1 lb 90 % lean ground beef
1 onion , diced
4 garlic cloves , minced
1 red bell pepper , diced
1 carrot , diced
1 celery , diced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 -2 tablespoon dried oregano
1 -2 tablespoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pinch red pepper flakes
5 lbs crushed tomatoes
1 tablespoon brown sugar ( optional )
salt and pepper
freshly grated parmesan cheese ( optional )
This classic meat sauce is a staple in many households, and can be adapted to suit different dietary requirements. Made with either lean ground turkey or 90% lean ground beef, this recipe is high in protein and low in fat. The addition of vegetables such as onions, garlic, red bell pepper, carrot and celery makes it more nutritious, while the combination of herbs and spices add depth of flavor. Instructions

1.In a skillet, brown the ground beef or turkey over high heat, breaking it up as you go until fully cooked.
2.While waiting for the meat to cook, heat a large cast-iron pot over medium heat.
3.Add the onions, garlic, red bell pepper, carrot and celery and cook for about 6 minutes until soft.
4.Add the cooked meat to the pot, stirring to combine.
5.Stir in the basil, oregano, parsley, garlic powder and red pepper flakes.
6.Add the crushed tomatoes and brown sugar, stirring to combine.
7.Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
8.Optionally, transfer to a crockpot and let it cook on low heat for 6-8 hours.
9.Serve with freshly grated parmesan cheese on top.
