Ingredients

1 ( .25 ounce ) package active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup margarine
1 1/2 tablespoons white sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 egg
5 pounds all-purpose flour , divided
1/2 cup fennel seed
1/4 cup water ( optional )

Instructions

1.In a bowl, dissolve yeast in 1 1/2 cups of water.
2.Stir in margarine, sugar, salt, egg, 4 cups of flour and fennel seeds.
3.Mix until smooth and gradually add remaining flour to form a stiff dough.
4.Knead on a floured surface for 5-10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
5.Divide dough into small portions and roll each into a thin rope.
6.Bring ends of the rope together to form a circle and twist ends together twice.
7.Place on greased baking sheets and let rest for 15-20 minutes.
8.Preheat oven to 375°F.
9.Brush Taralli with water and bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
