Ingredients

2 lbs mutton shoulder ( may substitute with beef shoulder ] )
1 1/2 cups water
6 ripe tomatoes
70 g tomato paste
3 potatoes
3 garlic cloves
2 onions
1 chicken stock cube
2 tablespoons oil
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon potato flour ( or use ap flour )
2 teaspoons sea salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon mixed herbs
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
Tamatie Bredie is a popular South African comfort food, which is usually prepared during the colder months. The word “bredie” is said to have originated from the Dutch word “brede”, meaning stew. It is a fusion of South African, Dutch, and Malay influences, and has become one of the staple dishes of South African cuisine. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 160°C.
2.Cut the mutton or beef into medium-sized pieces and season it with mixed herbs, salt, paprika, pepper, and chili powder.
3.Heat up a large casserole dish with oil on medium heat. Then, add the seasoned meat and cook until brown on both sides.
4.Add in the chopped onions and garlic to the casserole dish and stir for a few minutes.
5.Pour water, add chicken stock cube, tomato paste, sugar, and cubed potatoes to the casserole dish, and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
6.Peel and chop the tomatoes, then add them to the casserole dish and stir thoroughly.
7.Cover the dish with a lid and place it in the preheated oven for 2 - 3 hours.
8.Once cooked, remove from oven and mix the potato flour with butter in a separate bowl. Add it to the casserole dish and stir well.
9.Serve hot with white rice or mashed potato.
