Ingredients

1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup raw cashews
1 cup semolina
1 1/4 teaspoons black mustard seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons yellow split peas
2 teaspoons split white gram
2 green chili peppers , chopped
1 tablespoon gingerroot , grated
1/2 cup onion , chopped
1 tomatoes , peeled , seeded and chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt
1/2 cup yogurt
1 1/2 cups hot water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon cilantro leaf
1 Thai chile , chopped
2 garlic cloves , minced
Takkali Payam Opma is a popular South Indian breakfast dish made with semolina, vegetables, and spices. It is a staple in many households across India and is often served with coconut chutney or tomato chutney. This dish is also popularly known as Upma and is easy to prepare, making it a perfect breakfast option for busy mornings.

Instructions

1.Take a skillet and heat oil on medium heat.
2.Add cashews to the skillet and sauté until light brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
3.Add semolina to the same skillet and roast until brown. Remove and set aside.
4.In the same skillet, add mustard seeds, yellow split peas, white gram, chili peppers, ginger, onion, and tomatoes. Mix and cook until onion becomes translucent.
5.Add roasted semolina back to the pan and mix well.
6.Add salt, yogurt, and hot water to the pan and stir until well combined.
7.Cover the skillet and let the mixture cook for 10 minutes on low heat.
8.In a separate skillet, add 1 tablespoon of oil and add garlic and Thai chili. Cook for 1 minute on medium heat.
9.Remove skillet from heat and add lemon juice.
10.Add this mixture along with fried cashews to the cooked semolina mixture and mix well. Garnish with cilantro leaves and serve hot.
