Swiss Christmas Bread is a holiday tradition in Switzerland, and for good reason. This delicious bread is packed with raisins, candied cherries, citron peel, and walnuts, and is flavored with spices like nutmeg, mace, and cloves. The result is a sweet and chewy bread that's perfect for celebrating the season.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, nutmeg, mace, and cloves. Heat milk, water, and margarine until hot to the touch but not boiling. Stir into flour mixture along with egg until smooth. Stir in raisins, cherries, citron peel, and walnuts. Mix in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
2.Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl and turn to coat the surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
3.Punch dough down, divide in half, and let rest for 10 minutes. Grease 2 baking sheets. Shape each half into a round loaf. Place loaves on prepared sheets, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.
4.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Brush loaves with melted butter, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden. Remove from baking sheets and cool on wire racks.
