Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon ( I used cardamom instead )
1 apple ( I used a medium-sized Rome )
1/2 cup raisins ( recipe called for `` a few '' . Ha ! )
1 package active dry yeast
3/4 cup water ( Warm at 105-115 degrees )
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup flour
1 egg , beaten
1/4 cup shortening ( I used very soft butter )
1 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon ( This was NOT in the original recipe . If you 're using cinnamon above , then add this to the dough for )
This Swedish Apple Yeast Bread is a traditional recipe from Betty Crocker Recipe Cards that has been enjoyed by many families for decades. The bread is moist and lightly sweet, thanks to the addition of chopped apples and raisins. This bread is great for serving with butter and jam, as well as for sandwiches as an alternative to regular bread. Instructions

1.Melt butter and combine with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon (or cardamom) in a bowl. Set aside.
2.Peel and chop the apple into small pieces. Add to the butter-sugar mixture along with the raisins and mix well.
3.In a separate bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add 1/4 cup sugar, salt, 1 cup flour and beaten egg. Mix well.
4.Add the butter-apple mixture and 1/4 cup shortening (or soft butter) to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
5.Add 1 and 1/4 cups flour and 1 tsp cinnamon (optional). Mix to form a dough.
6.Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic.
7.Place the dough in a greased bowl and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
8.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Punch down dough and place in a greased 9-inch loaf pan.
9.Let the dough rise again until it reaches the top of the pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

This Swedish Apple Yeast bread is perfect for breakfast or brunch, and makes a delicious dessert just topped with butter or jam.

The chopped apples and raisins add great flavor and texture to the bread.

CONS

This bread does take some time for rising and baking, so plan accordingly.
