Instructions

1.In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
2.Meanwhile, in a large bowl, cream butter and 1/2 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
3.Beat in eggs, milk, salt, 1 teaspoon of crushed anise seed, and yeast mixture.
4.Gradually stir in enough flour to form a soft dough.
5.Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
6.Cover and let dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
7.Punch down dough and divide into halves.
8.On a floured surface, roll each half into a 16x10 inch rectangle.
9.Cut each rectangle widthwise into ten 1-inch strips.
10.Twist each strip two or three times.
11.Place twists 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets.
12.Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
13.Preheat oven to 375°F.
14.Sprinkle remaining sugar and crushed anise seed over twists.
15.Bake 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
16.Remove from pans to wire racks and cool.
