The Sugar Zwieback, also known as Zweiback, originated in the 16th century and was a staple food in European households. Meaning ‘twice-baked’ in German, this snack is a fermented and easy-to-make breakfast bread. It has a unique sweetness in every bite that goes very well with an early morning cup of coffee or tea. Traditionally, this bread was baked two times to make it crispy and aromatic. Sugar Zwiebacks are very much famous in Germany, Switzerland and Denmark as a breakfast snack, and can even be served with jam or butter topings.

Instructions

.Warm milk with butter until the butter melts completely. Pour it into another bowl and add honey, salt and sugar to it. Mix well and let it cool until it reaches room temperature.
.Take another small bowl and dissolve yeast in warm water in it. Keep it aside for 5 minutes until it gets bubbly.
.Add the yeast mix to the milk mix and stir it until it blends completely. Beat in the egg and add flour and nutmeg to the same mix. Stir everything well until the dough becomes smooth.
.Cover the bowl and leave it for 1 hour until the dough becomes double in size.
.Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a baking sheet with butter.
.Take some flour and sprinkle it onto the working surface of the dough. Knead it for 2-3 minutes and stretch it into an oval shape. Cut the dough lengthways and then cut it into ½’’ slices.
.Place them on a baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes until the Zwieback turns golden brown.
.Remove from the oven and let the Zwiebacks cool on a wire rack.
