Ingredients

1 tablespoon powdered egg whites
3/4 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup light corn syrup
8 cups powdered sugar
2 cups cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon powdered egg whites
3 tablespoons water
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
3 drops red food coloring
2 drops cinnamon extract
3 drops blue food coloring
2 drops peppermint extract
Sugar skulls are a popular decoration for the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead. These skulls are made of sugar and decorated with colorful patterns using fun and diverse shapes and designs. Traditionally, sugar skulls are a symbol of the cycle of life and death and are meant to honor and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away. Nowadays, they are a fun and creative tradition to celebrate this festival.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix powdered egg whites, water, vanilla extract and corn syrup.
2.Mix in the sugar and cornstarch until well combined and the dough is stiff.
3.Reserve 1 cup of the mixture. In another bowl, whisk together powdered egg whites and water. Add 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar to the mixture and combine well.
4.In the reserved mixture, add the red food coloring and cinnamon extract, mix well until the color is uniform. Add the blue food coloring and peppermint extract to the remaining mixture, mixing very well until the color is uniform.
5.Divide the dough in 6 parts, shaping them into a ball.
6.Using your fingers, make 6 indentations, one on each ball.
7.Gently press the white sugar dough into each indentation, smoothing it with your fingers.
8.Using the colored dough, shape 6 skulls to place on top of the white sugar dough. Let the skulls dry for at least 24 hours before using.

The skulls are a fun and spooky decoration for the day of the dead.
The recipe is easy to follow and the skulls are edible.

CONS

Due to the amount of sugar in the recipe, these skulls are not healthy.

These skulls may take some time to dry thoroughly and harden.
