Ingredients

1/2 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground lean pork
1 beaten egg
1/2 cup cooked rice ( firm )
1 -2 clove minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sweet Hungarian paprika
fresh pepper , a few turns of the mill
1/2 cup water , enough to hold together the above mixture about or 1/2 cup milk , which ever you prefer
1 head cabbage
1 can tomato puree
2 bay leaves
4 -6 peppercorns
1 pinch basil ( I like to use fresh minced )
Stuffed cabbage is a classic Eastern European dish that is enjoyed in many parts of the world. It's also known as Golabki or Halupki. The dish features a combination of ground beef and pork, mixed with cooked rice and spices, rolled up inside boiled cabbage leaves, and then smothered in a tomato-based sauce. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2.In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, beaten egg, minced garlic, salt, sweet Hungarian paprika, and fresh pepper together until well combined.
3.In a separate pot, bring water to a boil. Place the cabbage in the boiling water and remove the outermost leaves as they soften. Repeat this step until you have all the leaves you need for the stuffing.
4.Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf, folding over the sides and rolling the cabbage completely to form a ball. Place the stuffed cabbage balls in a baking dish.
5.In a separate pot, mix together the tomato puree, bay leaves, peppercorns, and basil, then pour the mixture over the stuffed cabbage balls.
6.Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 1 1/2 - 2 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the sauce has thickened.
