The Hungarian Torte is a traditional Eastern European pastry that is often served during special occasions such as weddings and festivals. It is made of layers of dough and walnuts, with apricot preserves adding a touch of sweetness. The pastry is then topped with a meringue made from egg whites and sugar, which gives it a light and fluffy texture. The Hungarian Torte is a labor of love and can take some time to prepare, but the end result is worth the effort. It is perfect for sharing with family and friends over a cup of coffee or tea.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 10 inch springform pan.
2.In a medium bowl, combine walnuts and cinnamon. Set aside.
3.In a small bowl, dissolve 3/4 cup sugar in warm water. Stir in yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar until dissolved. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
4.Beat in egg yolks and sour cream until well blended.
5.In a large bowl, cream 1 1/3 cups butter or margarine until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour, then yeast mixture. Mix until well blended. Divide dough into 5 equal parts and roll out each one on a floured surface into a circle about 10 inches in diameter.
6.Place one layer of dough in prepared pan. Spread 1/3 of the walnut mixture over the dough. Repeat layering 2 more times. Place the remaining two layers on top. Fold edges of the dough over to seal.
7.Beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually sprinkle in 2/3 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Spread mixture on top of torte. Bake for 70 to 80 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
