Ingredients

3 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup water , lukewarm
4 packages yeast
10 cups flour , all-purpose
1 tablespoon salt
2 1/2 cups butter , melted & cooled
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons fresh lemon rind , grated
5 egg yolks
2 ounces brandy
1 lb raisins , chopped
1 lb citron , chopped ( optional )
1 lb pecans , chopped or hickory nuts
1/2 lb glace cherries , chopped
1 lb dates , chopped
1/2 cup powdered sugar
Stollen is a traditional German bread that originated in Saxony in the 15th century. The shape of this fruit-filled bread symbolizes the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes, and it is traditionally enjoyed during the Christmas season. Instructions

1.Warm the milk in a saucepan until it reaches 98°F (36°C).
2.In a small bowl, mix the yeast and the lukewarm water.
3.In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour and salt.
4.Add the melted butter, sugar, grated lemon zest, egg yolks and brandy to the milk. Mix well.
5.Add the yeast mixture to the mixing bowl with the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly.
6.Knead in the raisins, citron, pecans, cherries and dates until evenly distributed.
7.Cover with a damp cloth and let rise for an hour in a warm place.
8.Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
9.Place dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
10.Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.
11.Remove from oven and let cool.
12.Generously dust the stollen with powdered sugar and wrap it tightly in foil to store.
