Ingredients

1 cup yellow split peas
6 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 tomatoes , chopped
2 medium onions , chopped
1/2 cup split white gram ( urad dal )
1/4 cup yellow moong dal ( moong dal )
1/4 cup red lentil ( masoor dal )
1/2 teaspoon indian chili pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
3 -4 tablespoons fresh cilantro , chopped , to serve
plain yogurt , to serve

Instructions

1.Rinse the yellow split peas in cold water, drain and add to a large pot along with water and salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the peas are tender.
2.While the peas are cooking, heat a skillet over medium heat and add cumin seeds. Toast for 1-2 minutes or until fragrant, then add oil, turmeric, gingerroot, garlic, tomatoes, and onions. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until the onions are softened.
3.Add this spice mixture to the cooked peas, along with split white gram, yellow moong dal, red lentil, Indian chili pepper, and paprika. Simmer for another 30 minutes or until the dals are tender and the mixture has thickened.
4.Serve hot with a dollop of plain yogurt and fresh cilantro on top.
