Speculaas cookies, also known as spicy Sinterklaas cakes, are a traditional Dutch holiday treat. These cookies are typically made with a combination of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, which give them their distinctive aroma and flavor. Mixed with almonds and candied citron, these cookies are perfectly sweetened and spiced to be enjoyed all winter long.

Instructions

1.Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2.In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, baking powder, salt, chopped slivered almonds, and citron. Set aside.
3.In a separate mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the milk and mix to combine.
4.Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until a dough forms. Knead the dough with your hands to create one large ball.
5.Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a thickness of 1/4 inch (0.6 cm). Cut out your desired shapes using cookie cutters.
6.Sprinkle the slivered almonds on top of the cookies and press them lightly so they adhere to the dough.
7.Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown.
