Sandra's German Apple Cake is a traditional German dessert that has been passed down through my family for generations. It's a beloved recipe that is perfect for fall when apples are in season, and it's a real crowd-pleaser at any gathering. The whole wheat flour and use of fresh apples make this cake both delicious and a bit healthier than other cake options. Plus, the tangy cream cheese frosting is the perfect complement to the sweet and spicy cake.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
2.In a large mixing bowl, beat together the eggs, oil, sugar, and vanilla until well combined.
3.Add in the baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and flour, mixing until fully incorporated.
4.Fold in the sliced apples and chopped walnuts.
5.Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
6.While the cake is baking, make the cream cheese frosting. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually add in the powdered sugar, mixing until fully combined.
7.Once the cake has finished baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature.
8.Once the cake has cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While Sandra’s German Apple Cake is not the healthiest dessert option out there, it does have a few health benefits.
The use of whole wheat flour adds more fiber to the cake, while the apples provide vitamins and minerals.
Walnuts are also known to contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and cream cheese is a good source of calcium.
