2 packages dry yeast
2 cups milk
3/4 - 1 1/2 cup butter or 3/4-1 1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
4 -5 cups flour
1 -2 g saffron
raisins ( decorations )

Typically eaten on St. Lucia Day, which is celebrated on December 13th in Sweden, these buns have come to represent the beginning of the Christmas season. Instructions

1.Warm the milk and melt the butter, stirring together in a large bowl until the mixture reaches room temperature.
2.Add the yeast, sugar, salt, egg, saffron, and 4 cups of flour to the bowl, mixing well. Knead the mixture until the dough is smooth and elastic, for about 10 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, add the remaining cup of flour a little at a time.
3.Cover the dough with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
4.Divide the dough into equal parts, roll them out into strips, and shape them into S-shapes. Place the buns onto a baking sheet with parchment paper.
5.Let the buns rest and rise for another 15 minutes, brush with egg, then gently press raisins into the dough.
6.Bake at 400°F for 8-10 minutes, until the buns are lightly golden brown.
7.Serve warm with coffee or tea for a traditional Swedish Christmas treat.
