Ingredients

1 kg chuck steak , big dice
125 125 g lardons , small cube or 125 g ham , pieces small cube
1 1/2 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup water
2 -3 beef bouillon cubes
cayenne , a few shakes
1/2 teaspoon provance herbs or 1/2 teaspoon mixed herbs
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon basil
1/2 cup dry red wine
2 onions , chopped
1 celery rib , chopped small
200 g mushrooms , small , peeled and in chunks
1 can canned tomatoes , blended with the juice
salt and pepper

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
2.In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the diced beef in oil over medium-high heat. Remove the beef once it has a golden sear.

4.Add the mushrooms and celery to the pot and allow them to sauté for a few minutes.
5.Mix in the beef, canned tomatoes with juice, water, red wine, and beef bouillon cubes to the pot. Add the cayenne pepper, herbs, oregano, and basil. Stir the mixture.
6.Allow the pot pie-casserole filling to come to a simmer.
7.Transfer the pot to the oven and bake, covered, for 2-2 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
8.Before serving, season with salt and pepper to taste.
