Refresco De Avena, or oatmeal drink, is a popular beverage in the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries. Although oats are typically thought of as a breakfast food, they can also be used to make a delicious and healthy drink. Piloncillo sugar, which is commonly used in Latin American cooking, gives this drink a unique taste while also providing sweetness. The lime adds a touch of brightness and acidity to balance out the flavors.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, add the grated piloncillo sugar and one quart of warm water. Stir until the sugar has dissolved.
2.Add the old-fashioned oats and the small lime halves to the bowl, and stir together.
3.Let the mixture sit for at least an hour, or overnight if possible, to let the oats soak and infuse the water with flavor.
4.After the mixture has sat, remove the lime halves and strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher, discarding any solids.
5.Optional: add cardamom seeds to the pitcher and stir well.
6.Chill the oatmeal drink in the refrigerator until cold, then serve over ice or as desired.
