Instructions

1.In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
2.Stir suet, raisins or currants, and molasses into the flour mixture.
3.Mix in milk and brandy, if using, until well combined.
4.Grease a 2-quart mold and pack in the pudding mixture.
5.Cover the mold tightly with foil or wax paper and tie it securely with string to make it watertight.
6.Place the mold on a rack in a deep pot with enough hot water to come halfway up the sides of the mold.
7.Cover and steam for about 6 hours, adding more water as needed.
8.Remove the mold from the pot, let it cool for 15 minutes, then turn it out onto a serving dish.
9.Combine butter, powdered sugar, lemon, and nutmeg to make a glaze and pour over the pudding.
