Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/4 cup light molasses ( unsulfured )
1 egg
2 cups confectioners ' sugar , for dusting ( icing )

Instructions

1.In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, black pepper, anise seed, cinnamon, baking soda, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
2.In a large bowl, cream the butter with brown sugar until light and fluffy.
3.Add molasses and egg. Mix well.
4.Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until just combined.
5.Cover the dough in the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight.
6.Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
7.Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them about 1 inch apart on the prepared baking sheet.
8.Bake for 12-15 minutes, until edges are firm and the cookies are slightly cracked.
9.Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer onto a wire rack.
10.Place confectioners' sugar in a large bowl. Roll each cookie in the sugar, then place back on the wire rack to cool completely.
