Ingredients

1 large onion , grated
1/4 lb butter
2 lbs ground round
1 tablespoon salt ( I use Kosher )
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1 egg
1 lb elbow macaroni
3 eggs , beaten
1 3/4 cups romano cheese , grated
1/4 lb butter
1/2 cup flour
3 cups milk
5 egg yolks
1/4 cup romano cheese , grated
Pastitso is a traditional Greek dish that is similar to lasagna. It is made with layers of macaroni, ground beef, and a creamy white sauce. The dish is hearty and filling, making it a popular meal for families and large gatherings. Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 350°F.
2.In a large skillet, sauté the onion in 1/4 pound of butter until soft.
3.Add the ground round and cook until brown.
4.Add salt, pepper and cinnamon and stir.
5.Add tomato paste and ½ cup of water. Cook for 15 minutes over low heat.
6.Stir in 1 beaten egg and set aside.
7.Boil macaroni as directed on package.
8.Mix macaroni with 3 beaten eggs and 1 3/4 cups of grated romano cheese. Set aside.
9.In a separate saucepan, melt 1/4 pound of butter. Add flour, stirring constantly until smooth.
10.Gradually add milk and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring constantly.
11.Add 5 egg yolks and 1/4 cup of grated romano cheese. Cook until it thickens.
12.Grease a baking dish and pour in half of the macaroni mixture. Spread the meat mixture over the top, and then add the remaining macaroni.
13.Pour the milk mixture over the top and sprinkle with grated cheese.
14.Bake for 45 to 60 minutes or until top is golden brown.
