Pasteles De Guayaba, or Guava and Cream Cheese Pastries, are a popular treat in many Latin American countries. These pastries are made with a simple cream cheese dough, which is rolled out and filled with a sweet and tangy guava paste. Once baked, the pastries are golden brown and crispy on the outside, with a soft and creamy interior. They are perfect for breakfast with a cup of coffee or tea, or as a sweet dessert to share with friends and family.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and softened butter together until smooth.
2.Gradually add in the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
3.Divide the dough in half, and roll each half out into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick.
4.Spread the guava paste over each rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges.
5.Roll each rectangle up tightly, starting from the long edge.
6.Slice the rolls into 1-inch pieces and place them on a lined baking sheet.
7.Sprinkle sugar over the tops of the pastries.
8.Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed.

PROS

These pastries are sweet, flaky, and bursting with the delicious flavor of guava and cream cheese.

They are perfect for breakfast or dessert, and can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge or freezer.

CONS

This recipe does require some prep time and patience, as you need to assemble and roll out the pastries.

Additionally, guava paste can be difficult to find in some areas.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While these pastries are not particularly healthy, guava paste is a good source of vitamins A and C, and is high in fiber and antioxidants.
However, these health benefits are likely offset by the high sugar and calorie content of the pastries.
