1 egg , beaten
1 tablespoon vital wheat gluten ( optional )
extra flour , for handling

Instructions

1.In a saucepan, heat the shortening, milk, water, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 2 teaspoons salt over medium heat until the shortening has melted and the mixture is warm.
2.In a small bowl, dissolve 1 teaspoon sugar and yeast in 1/4 cup warm water, let it sit for around 10 minutes.
3.In a large bowl, mix the flour and vital wheat gluten (optional), then add the yeast mixture and warm milk mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
4.Knead the dough for 10 minutes then transfer it to a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 hour.
5.Preheat the oven to 375F.
6.Divide the dough into 2 pieces, roll each piece into a rectangle shape of around 10-inch x 4-inch. Cut slits in the dough at an angle and brush with beaten egg. Place the loaves onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them rise again for around 10 minutes. Then bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
