1 cup milk

1 teaspoon anise seed
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon warm water
2 eggs
3 egg yolks
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

1.In a small saucepan, heat the milk until it just begins to steam, then remove from heat. Add in the butter and stir to combine. Once cooled to lukewarm, add in 2 tablespoons of sugar, the salt, orange zest, and anise seed, and stir to combine.
2.In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast into 1/4 cup of warm water and set aside.
3.In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and egg yolks together until light and frothy. Add in the yeast mixture and the milk mixture.
4.Gradually mix in the flour until a stiff dough forms, then turn out onto a lightly floured surface to knead. Knead the dough for 10-12 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
5.Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
6.Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a baking sheet.
7.Punch down the dough, then divide into portions and place onto the greased baking sheet, forming into the traditional bone and skull shapes.
8.Brush with a beaten egg, then sprinkle with the remaining sugar.
9.Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Let cool before serving.
