6 - 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 packages active dry yeast or 2 packages fast rising yeast
2 tablespoons orange rind
2 teaspoons lemons , rind of
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
2 eggs , at room temperature
1 cup chopped dates or 1 cup pitted dates , snipped
1/2 cup chopped slivered almonds , toasted
confectioners ' sugar frosting , optional

Instructions

1.In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups flour, sugar, yeast, orange rind, lemon rind, cardamom, and salt.
2.In a saucepan, heat milk, water, and butter until warm (120-130 degrees F on a thermometer).
3.Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients and beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Increase the speed to high and beat for 3 minutes.
4.Stir in the dates, almonds, and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
5.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 6 to 8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
6.Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the surface of the dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
7.Punch the dough down and shape into two round loaves. Place the loaves on a greased baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
8.Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from the pan and cool on a wire rack. Drizzle with confectioners' sugar frosting if desired.
