Ingredients

9 ounces flour ( Mr. Dowding says `` plain flour , '' which I interpret as `` all-purpose flour '' in the U.S . )
1 ounce icing sugar
4 1/2 ounces butter
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
5 -6 bananas , ripe
3/4 pint heavy cream
2 teaspoons caster sugar
1/8 teaspoon instant coffee
1/4 teaspoon ground coffee
The Original Banoffi-Banoffee Pie is an English dessert that dates back to the 1970s. The name 'banoffee' is a combination of banana and toffee, which are the main ingredients used in this dessert. It's believed to have been created by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie at The Hungry Monk restaurant in East Sussex, England. The classic recipe features a buttery pastry crust, a layer of creamy caramel made from sweetened condensed milk, sliced bananas, and whipped cream. It's a decadent dessert that's perfect for special occasions or as a sweet treat after a meal.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
2.Make the crust by mixing the flour and icing sugar together in a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles bread crumbs.
3.Beat the egg and egg yolk together in a small bowl and add to the flour mixture. Mix until the dough comes together.
4.Roll out the dough on a floured surface and use it to line a 9-inch (23-cm) pie dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
5.While the crust is cooling, prepare the filling. Place the 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk in a large pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2-3 hours, making sure the cans stay covered with water at all times. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely before opening the cans.
6.Spread the caramel over the cooled pie crust. Slice the bananas and arrange them over the caramel layer.
7.In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with the caster sugar until firm peaks form. Dissolve the instant coffee and ground coffee in a little boiling water and add to the cream. Mix well.
8.Spoon the cream mixture over the bananas to cover them completely. Sprinkle with cocoa powder or grated chocolate, if desired. Chill for a few hours or overnight before serving.
