Old English Cornish Pasties are an iconic, handheld meal that dates back to the 13th century. They originated as a way for miners to have a handheld meal that would stay warm for a long time, and they have since become a staple of British cuisine. The pasty is a hearty, savory, stuffed pastry that is filled with meat, vegetables, and potatoes. It is often formed into a half-moon shape, crimped on the edge, and baked until golden brown. Today, Cornish Pasties are enjoyed all over the world as a delicious, portable meal that is perfect for those on the go.

Instructions

1.In a bowl, combine the flour and salt. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the lard/shortening into the flour mixture until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
2.Gradually add the water and mix until the dough comes together, adding more water if needed.
3.Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. Divide dough into 4 equal portions and roll each into a 7-8 inch circle.
4.Preheat oven to 375°F. Place a small amount of beef/chicken liver, celery, ground beef, carrot, turnip, onion and potato slices onto one half of each pastry circle. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5.Fold the other half of the pastry circle over the filling. Crimp edges together to seal. Brush beaten egg over the top of each pasty.
6.Place pasties onto a baking sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature.
