Ingredients

1/2 cup light brown sugar , packed
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon , ground
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg , ground
8 slices white bread ( use Texas toast , that REALLY thick white bread )
8 eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 1/2 cups milk ( original recipe calls for whole milk , I used 2 % )
1 tablespoon vanilla ( use the very best ! Use Penzey 's ! )
6 apples ( used a variety ( Jonagold , McIntosh , your favorites )
2 tablespoons unsalted butter ( plus more to grease pan )

Instructions

1.Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
2.In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
3.Spread the mixture evenly over the bottom of the baking dish.
4.Cut the bread into large cubes and arrange them in the dish.
5.In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, milk, and vanilla.
6.Pour the mixture over the bread cubes.
7.Cover and refrigerate overnight.
8.The next day, preheat the oven to 350°F.
9.Core, peel, and slice the apples.
10.In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat.
11.Add the apples and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
12.Spread the apples over the bread cubes.
13.Bake the French toast for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and set.
14.Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
