Ingredients

1 tablespoon oil
500 g lean ground beef
3 garlic cloves , finely chopped
420 g pasta sauce
500 ml water
10 button mushrooms , finely chopped
1 carrot , finely diced
1 zucchini , finely diced
3 cups mashed potatoes
Shepherd's Pie is a traditional dish that originated in Britain but has become a popular meal in many countries, including New Zealand. This dish is also known as Cottage Pie, where beef is used instead of lamb. The New Zealand version of Shepherd's Pie is slightly different as it includes vegetables such as carrots and zucchini in the meat mixture, which provides a fresh and healthy addition to the dish. It is a simple and easy-to-make recipe that can be enjoyed as a weeknight meal or a cozy family dinner.

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).
2.Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and beef and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until beef is browned.
3.Add pasta sauce and water, bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes or until slightly thickened.
4.Add mushrooms, carrot, zucchini and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
5.Spread mixture into a 26cm baking dish and top with mashed potatoes. Smooth the surface with a knife.
6.Bake for 30 minutes or until potato is lightly browned and mixture is heated through.
