New Zealand Pasties are a traditional, hearty snack or light meal. They were created as an easy to eat meal for miners in the 19th century. The pasty's filling is made of a mix of ground beef, vegetables, and potatoes, wrapped in a flaky, buttery pastry. They are easy to make, convenient to eat, and customizable to individual preference. They are a popular food item in New Zealand and are often eaten as a quick lunch or snack.

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, Crisco, butter or margarine, and salt. Mix until the mixture forms pea-sized crumbs.
3.Gradually add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and knead the mixture until a dough forms. Cover and refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes.
4.In a separate bowl, mix together the diced potatoes, ground beef, onions, diced carrots, and green peas (if using) until well combined.
5.Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into circles. Place 1-2 tablespoons of the beef mixture onto each circle and fold over, pressing the edges with a fork to seal.
6.Place the pasties onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
