1 lb Italian sausage ( sweet , mild or hot-your choice )
1 lb lean ground beef
1 medium onion ( minced )
3 garlic cloves ( crushed )
1 can crushed tomatoes
2 cans tomato paste
1 can tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon dried basil leaves
1 tablespoon fennel seed
1 tablespoon italian seasoning
1 tablespoon oregano
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 tablespoons parsley
12 lasagna noodles
16 ounces small curd cottage cheese
1 egg
16 ounces mozzarella cheese ( shredded )
8 ounces parmesan cheese ( grated )

Instructions

1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2.Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
3.In a large skillet, cook Italian sausage, ground beef, minced onion, and crushed garlic over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, stirring frequently.
4.Drain any excess fat from the skillet, and then stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, granulated sugar, dried basil, fennel seed, italian seasoning, oregano, black pepper, and parsley.
5.Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
6.In a separate bowl, mix together the cottage cheese and egg.
7.Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a baking dish.
8.Layer 4 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce, then spread half of the cottage cheese mixture over the noodles.
9.Sprinkle 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese and 1/3 of the parmesan cheese over the cottage cheese layer.
10.Repeat these layers (meat sauce, noodles, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, and parmesan cheese) one more time.
11.Layer the remaining 4 lasagna noodles on top of the cheese layer, and then spread the remaining meat sauce over the noodles.
12.Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese on top of the meat sauce.
13.Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
14.Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
