Carne asada is a beloved dish in Mexican cuisine, and my mom's recipe is no exception. As a child, I remember the smell of the meat marinating in the soy sauce and garlic, and the taste of the juicy, tender meat on a warm tortilla with melty cheese and crispy lettuce. This dish is perfect for a family barbecue or a casual dinner with friends, and will transport you to the sunny streets of Mexico with just one bite. Whether you're a meat lover or a vegetarian, you can customize this dish to your liking with a variety of toppings, sauces, and sides.

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix together the reduced sodium soy sauce, minced garlic, and black pepper to make the marinade.
2.Add the flap meat (or skirt steak or flank steak) to the bowl and toss to coat.
3.Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours to allow the meat to fully marinate.
4.Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
5.Remove the meat from the marinade and grill for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness.
6.While the meat is cooking, prepare your toppings by shredding the cheese, lettuce, and tomato, and chopping the cilantro and onion.
7.Once the meat is done cooking, let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain.
8.Serve the carne asada on tortillas with your desired toppings, hot sauce, and a lime wedge on the side.

PROS

My Mom’s Carne Asada is a classic Mexican dish that is bursting with flavor, thanks to the tangy and savory marinade.

It’s a versatile dish that can be served with a variety of toppings and sides, making it perfect for a family meal or a crowd.

Flap meat, skirt steak, and flank steak are relatively inexpensive cuts of meat, making this dish affordable for any budget.

CONS

Grilling the meat can be a bit tricky if you’re not used to cooking with these cuts.
It’s important to slice against the grain to ensure that the meat stays tender and doesn’t become chewy.

While this dish is delicious, it’s not the healthiest option due to its high sodium content and the fact that it’s traditionally served on a tortilla with cheese and other toppings.
It’s best enjoyed as an occasional treat, rather than a daily meal.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

While this dish isn’t particularly healthy, it does contain a good amount of protein, which is important for building and repairing muscles.
The garlic in the marinade has been linked to reducing inflammation and improving heart health, while the black pepper may improve digestion and boost the immune system.
