Garam masala is a blend of ground spices commonly used in Indian cuisine. Each region and family has its own unique recipe, but the core ingredients typically include fragrant spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. This recipe for mom's teacher's garam masala is based on a traditional Punjabi blend and is perfect for adding warmth and depth of flavor to curries, stews, and other dishes. While store-bought garam masala is readily available, making your own allows you to control the quality and freshness of the ingredients and create a unique flavor that is tailored to your tastes.

Instructions

1.In a dry frying pan, toast coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon, black cardamom pods, cloves, and whole black peppercorns for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
2.Grind the toasted spices to a fine powder in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
3.Store the garam masala in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

PROS

Homemade garam masala adds a rich, complex flavor to Indian dishes and can be customized to suit personal tastes and preferences.

CONS

Making garam masala can be time-consuming and requires several ingredients that may not be readily available in all regions.

It can also be challenging to grind the spices to the right consistency without burning or overworking them.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

Garam masala contains several spices that have been linked to health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, improving digestion, and aiding in weight loss.
However, the spice blend is typically used in small quantities and is not a significant source of nutrients or health benefits on its own.
