Mixtas are a popular street food in Guatemala, featuring fresh vegetables and grilled hot dogs all wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. This recipe adds a zesty guacamole for an extra burst of flavor. The dish is often served with a side of curtido, a pickled cabbage salad. Mixtas are perfect for a quick and easy lunch or dinner, and can be customized with various toppings to fit your preferences. This recipe makes 5 mixtas, but can easily be doubled or tripled for a larger group.

Instructions

1.Preheat grill to medium-high heat
2.Grill hot dogs until cooked through, turning occasionally for about 5-6 minutes, then remove from the grill
3.Grill tortillas until soft and warm, about 30 seconds on each side, then remove from the grill
4.Mash the avocados in a bowl until slightly chunky. Add lemon juice and garlic salt, then stir to combine.
5.To assemble a mixta, place a grilled hot dog on top of a tortilla. Add a heaping spoonful of the avocado mixture, then a handful of thinly sliced cabbage. Drizzle with salsa and guacamole. Serve immediately.

PROS

Mixtas are a quick and easy meal that can be customized to your liking.
They’re also a great way to use up leftover hot dogs and tortillas.

CONS

While mixtas can be a healthy meal option when loaded up with veggies, they can also be high in calories, fat, and sodium when topped with too much salsa and guacamole.
Use caution when consuming processed meats like hot dogs, which have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease.

HEALTH & BENEFITS

The cabbage in mixtas is low in calories and high in vitamins C and K, while the avocados are a great source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and potassium. Salsa is also a good source of lycopene, a potent antioxidant that has been shown to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
