Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
2 regular size packets active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon orange zest
5 1/2 cups flour ( divided )
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup butter
4 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup orange juice
Pan De Muerto is a traditional Mexican dessert bread that is commonly made during the Dia de Muertos celebration in Mexico. This delicious bread is often enjoyed with hot chocolate, coffee or tea. Each loaf is shaped like a bun with unique bread lines on the top representing bones. It’s a versatile bread that can be enjoyed by everyone. Miniature version of this bread is perfect for a party or special event.

Instructions

1.In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, orange zest and 4 1/2 cups of flour.
2.In a small saucepan, heat milk, water and butter until butter is melted and the mixture is warm.
3.Add the warm milk mixture to the flour mixture and stir well.
4.Add eggs to the mixture one at a time and stir well.
5.Stir in the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
6.Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth.
7.Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Place in a warm spot and allow it to rise to double its size (about 1 hour).
8.Punch the dough down and divide into 2 oz balls.
9.Shape each ball into a mini bread and make 4 cuts crosswise on the top of each bread.
10.Place on a lined pan and cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise for another 15 minutes.
11.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
12.Brush each bread with sugar and orange juice mixture.
13.Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve and enjoy!
