Ingredients

1 2/3 cups textured vegetable protein , granules
1 1/2 cups hot vegetarian beef broth or 1 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon tamari
1 teaspoon vegan worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup red wine
1 tablespoon canola oil or 1 tablespoon melted vegan margarine
1 large sweet onion , finely grated
1 large russet potato , skin-on , finely grated
2 garlic cloves , grated
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon savory
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1/2 teaspoon fennel seed
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup hot water
1/3 cup toasted soy flour or 1/3 cup fine cracker crumb
1 tablespoon cornstarch , mixed with
1/4 cup cold water , for brushing
4 pie crusts , unbaked ( or enough dough )
Mini Tourtières is a French-Canadian meat pie, which is a staple on many holiday tables in Quebec. Made using a mixture of textured vegetable protein and potato, this little meat pie has tons of flavor packed into each bite. Full of warm comforting flavors like cinnamon, savory, thyme, and clove, this is the perfect dish to warm up any chilly evening. The vegan version of this recipe is a great addition to any plant-based or vegetarian diet. Serve with your favorite sides like mashed potatoes, roasted root vegetables, or a simple green salad.

Instructions

1.In a saucepan, add the textured vegetable protein, hot vegetarian beef broth/water, tamari, vegan worcestershire sauce and red wine. Stir until well combined.
2.In a separate pan, heat the canola oil/melted vegan margarine and add the finely grated sweet onion, garlic and russet potato. Cook until the onion is caramelized and the potato is soft.
3.Add the salt, cinnamon, pepper, savory, dried thyme, celery salt, fennel seed and ground cloves to the onion mixture. Mix until well combined.
4.Add the onion mixture to the textured vegetable protein mixture. Mix until well combined.
5.Add the hot water and toasted soy flour/fine cracker crumb to the mixture. Stir until well combined and heated through.
6.Remove the mixture from the heat and allow to cool.
7.Preheat the oven to 375°F.
8.Brush cornstarch mixture onto the edges of your unbaked pie crusts. Fill each crust with the meat mixture. Cover with another round of pie crust, pinch the edges of the top and bottom crust together and cut a small slit in the center of the top crust.
9.Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30-45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot.
