1 sheet puff pastry , thawed
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
4 large egg yolks , room temperature
2 cups whole milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter , diced
Mille Foglie is a classic Italian dessert that translates to 'thousand leaves.' As the name suggests, it's made up of layers upon layers of thin, flaky pastry and smooth, creamy custard. This dessert is also known as Napoleon or mille-feuille in other countries. The dessert is typically dusted with powdered sugar and served chilled after being assembled and sliced into individual servings.

Instructions

1.Preheat your oven to 400°F.
2.On a floured surface, roll out your puff pastry to 1/4 inch thickness.
3.Cut the pastry into 3 rectangular pieces and place them on a lined baking sheet.
4.Prick the pastry all over with a fork, then bake for 10-15 minutes until golden.
5.In a large saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, and salt until well combined.
6.Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly.
7.Cook the mixture over medium heat until it thickens and comes to a boil.
8.Remove the pan from the heat, then stir in the vanilla extract and butter until smooth.
9.Assemble the Mille Foglie by layering the puff pastry with the custard mixture, starting with a pastry layer and ending with a custard layer on top.
10.Chill the Mille Foglie in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.

CONS

The recipe is a bit time-consuming, so it’s not something you can whip up quickly.

Also, Mille Foglie can be quite rich, so it’s best enjoyed in moderation.
