May Wine Punch, also known as Mai Bowle in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is a traditional beverage served in spring and early summer to celebrate the arrival of warmer weather and blooming flowers. It originated in medieval times as a way to honor the pagan goddess Maia, whose festival was held on May 1st. The punch is made with sweet woodruff, a fragrant herb that grows in Europe and Asia, and is known for its sweet smell and taste. The herb is often used in sweets and drinks, and has been described as having a vanilla-like flavor with hints of almond and hay.

Instructions

1.Wash the sweet woodruff under cold water, pat dry with a towel, and crush it lightly. Place it in a large glass bowl, along with the sugar or honey and white wine.
2.Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight.
3.Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a punch bowl. Add the brandy, if using, and the strawberries.
4.Slowly pour in the champagne or German Sekt, stirring gently to combine.
5.Add ice and orange slices, and garnish with sweet woodruff and edible flowers, if desired.
