Ingredients

1 lb green beans , finely chopped
salt
2 teaspoons oil
3 tablespoons bengal gram dal ( yellow split peas , chana dal )
2 tablespoons coriander seeds
4 dried red chilies
1/2 teaspoon asafoetida powder
4 tablespoons grated fresh coconut or 5 1/2 tablespoons dried flaked coconut
1/2 teaspoon tamarind pulp
salt
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon brown mustard seeds
1 teaspoon bengal gram dal ( washed urad dal )
1 dried red chili
3 garlic cloves , minced
1 teaspoon cumin seed
3 curry leaves

Instructions

1.Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a frying pan on medium heat.
2.Add 3 tablespoons of bengal gram dal and fry until golden brown.
3.Add 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds and 4 dried red chilies, and fry for a minute.
4.Add 1/2 teaspoon of asafoetida powder and fry for a few seconds.
5.Add 4 tablespoons of grated fresh coconut or 5 1/2 tablespoons of dried flaked coconut and fry for a minute.
6.Turn off the flame and add 1/2 teaspoon of tamarind pulp and salt to taste. Mix well and let it cool.
7.Once cooled, grind the mixture to a coarse powder.
8.Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan on medium heat.
9.Add 1 teaspoon of brown mustard seeds and let them splutter.
10.Add 1 teaspoon of bengal gram dal (washed urad dal) and fry until golden brown.
11.Add 1 dried red chili, 3 minced garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon of cumin seed, and 3 curry leaves. Fry for a minute.
12.Add 1 lb of finely chopped green beans and salt to taste. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until beans are tender.
13.Add the ground masala powder and cook for another 5 minutes.
14.Serve hot as a side dish.
