Ingredients

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 large egg , beaten
1 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
1 medium onion , chopped fine
4 garlic cloves , minced
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves , chopped
1/4 cup parmesan cheese or 1/4 cup romano cheese , grated
coarse salt
black pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
4 garlic cloves , crushed and chopped

2 tablespoons parsley , chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 can chunky style crushed tomatoes
salt & freshly ground black pepper
4 crusty hoagie rolls ( with or without sesame seeds )
1 bag shredded provolone cheese or ( 10 ounce ) bag Italian cheese blend
shredded sweet basil or shredded spicy arugula leaf , for garnish

Instructions

1.In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onions, minced garlic, crushed red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, parsley and grated cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste.
2.Form the mixture into 12-14 meatballs of equal size.
3.Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs until evenly browned.
4.Remove the meatballs and set aside. Add the crushed garlic, chopped parsley, crushed red pepper flakes and oregano to the frying pan and cook until fragrant.
5.Add the chunky style crushed tomatoes, canned crushed tomatoes, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened, for about 15 minutes.
6.Add the meatballs to the sauce and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
7.Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
8.Slice the hoagie rolls in half lengthwise, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
9.Divide the meatballs between the four rolls, and top with the shredded cheese.
10.Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
11.Cut the subs in half, and garnish with shredded basil or arugula.
