Ingredients

1 cup black lentils ( kaali daal )
1/4 cup split chickpeas ( channa daal )
1/4 cup red kidney beans ( rajma )
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 onion , finely chopped
1 piece ginger , minced
2 cloves garlic , minced
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 tomatoes , finely chopped
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon red chile powder
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
salt to taste
2 teaspoons butter
2 teaspoons yogurt
3 sprigs cilantro leaves
Makhani Daal, also known as Butter or Creamy Lentils, is a popular dish from the Indian region of Punjab. It is made by cooking black lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans in a tomato-based sauce that is spiced with a blend of aromatic spices. This rich and flavorful dish is perfect for a comforting dinner on a cold evening or for a healthy lunch that will keep you full for hours. Makhani Daal is traditionally served with a side of rice or Indian bread.

Instructions

1.Wash the black lentils, split chickpeas, and red kidney beans in cold water and soak them overnight in water.
2.Drain the water and combine the lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, and 6 cups of fresh water in a pressure cooker. Cook for 15-20 minutes over medium-high heat until fully cooked and tender.
3.In a separate pan, heat vegetable oil and add onion, ginger, and garlic. Fry until the onion is golden brown.
4.Add cumin seeds and fry for a few more seconds.
5.Add the finely chopped tomatoes and cook for 3-4 minutes until the oil separates.
6.Add all the spices (ground coriander, garam masala, red chile powder, turmeric powder, salt) and mix well.
7.Add the cooked beans along with water and mix well.
8.Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
9.Add butter, yogurt, and cilantro leaves and stir well.
10.Serve hot with rice or bread.
