Mincemeat has been a popular dessert ingredient in the UK for centuries and was originally made with meat as the name suggests. However, by the 19th century, the recipe had evolved to use fruit as a replacement for the meat. This traditional recipe dates back to the 18th century and uses beef to create a rich and savory Mincemeat mixture that is perfect for holiday pies and tarts. The mixture is infused with spices, dried fruit, and brandy, which lends a festive note to the dish. Despite its name, Mincemeat doesn't actually contain meat anymore and makes for a delightful sweet treat.

Instructions

1.In a large saucepan, combine ground beef and enough water to cover it. Cook over medium heat until the beef is browned and the water has evaporated, stirring occasionally.
2.Add apples, lemon peel, orange peel, citron, raisins or currants, orange juice, lemon juice, suet, brown sugar, salt, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, mace, nutmeg, bourbon or brandy, and rum or sherry wine.
3.Mix well and cook on low heat for about 3 hours or until the mixture is thick and the apples are soft, stirring occasionally.
4.Remove from heat and let cool. Bottle the mixture in sterilized jars and store in a cool and dark place.
