Ingredients

1 kg Red Delicious apple , peeled , cored and sliced thinly
1 teaspoon butter
water , to cover the apple
1 tablespoon lemon juice
8 bread rolls
1 liter milk
6 eggs , separated
1 -2 teaspoon vanilla sugar
caster sugar
150 g sugar
1 -2 tablespoon cinnamon
100 g crushed walnuts
100 g sugar , extra
3 -4 tablespoons apricot jam
50 -60 g butter , extra

Maglyarakas (Hungarian Bread and Butter Pudding) is a traditional Hungarian dessert that is perfect for cold winter nights. Instructions

1.Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.
2.Put the sliced apples, lemon juice, sugar, water, and butter into a pot, and cook until soft.
3.In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, vanilla sugar and milk.
4.In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
5.Cut the bread rolls into rounds.
6.Grease a baking dish and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
7.Layer bread rolls, apples, sugar, cinnamon, apricot jam and crushed walnuts in the baking dish.
8.Pour the egg yolk and milk mixture over the layered ingredients.
9.Top with egg whites and sprinkle with extra sugar.
10.Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
