Ingredients

2 1/2 tablespoons canola oil , plus more for greasing
2 tablespoons small dried shrimp
1 lb daikon radish , peeled
2 dried chinese link sausage ( casings removed finely chopped )
1 medium shallot , finely chopped
1/2 cup green onion , finely chopped
2 tablespoons green onions , finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups rice flour
1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder
5 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1/4 cup chili-garlic sauce
1 red chili pepper , thinly sliced ( garnish )
Luo Go Bao, also known as Daikon Cake, is a traditional Chinese appetizer that has been enjoyed for many years. This dish is made from grated daikon radish, Chinese link sausage, dried shrimp, and rice flour. It’s steamed until solid, then fried with a garlic hoisin sauce, and served with toppings such as green onions and red chillies. This dish is popular during Chinese New Year, as it symbolizes good luck and prosperity. Luo Go Bao can be found at dim sum restaurants, but it’s also easy to make at home for an authentic Chinese experience.

Instructions

1.In a pan, heat 1 tbsp of canola oil, add dried shrimp and stir fry until crispy. Set aside
2.Grate daikon and mix with 2 tsp of salt, let it sit for 10 min, then squeeze out excess moisture with a cheese cloth
3.In a pan, heat 1 tbsp of canola oil, then add chopped sausage, shallot, and chopped green onions. Sauté until fragrant and set aside
4.In a mixing bowl, add the squeezed daikon, rice flour, five spice powder, sugar, 1 tsp of salt, 2 1/2 tbsp of canola oil, and 1 1/2 cups of water. Mix well until smooth
5.Pour the mixture into a greased 8-inch cake pan and steam for 30 minutes until solid
6.Once cooled, slice the daikon cake into small rectangular pieces. In a pan, heat 2 tbsp of hoisin sauce, chilli-garlic sauce and 1 tbsp of canola oil, then add in the daikon cake pieces. Coat well
7.Serve with a sprinkle of crispy dried shrimp, diced green onions and red chillies for garnish
